Why the charter comes first

Many improvement projects that stall were in trouble at the first meeting. The problem was described one way by the people doing the work and another by the people paying for it, the scope kept growing, and nobody wrote down where the numbers stood before anything changed. The charter is the one page that settles those three things before the work starts.

How the pack is used

Start with the problem statement worksheet. Its test is simple: the statement is finished when the person who runs the process and the person who signs off the budget would both sign it. Then fill in the charter (the scope, the team, the measure and the target) and record the baseline in the metrics workbook, which works out DPMO, the sigma level, Cp and Cpk for you.

The worked example shows each sheet filled in from a real engagement, with the details anonymised, so you can see what a finished one looks like.
